Schweigaarden is the first new building in the transformation of Landbrukskvartalet, the “Agriculture Quarter”, a major mixed-use redevelopment in central Oslo.
Rooted in the neighbourhood of Grønland’s history of food production and craftsmanship, the project contributes to the area’s renewal by creating an open, inclusive, and vibrant city block connecting Gamlebyen, Oslo S, Bjørvika, and Grønland.
The office building forms a welcoming southern gateway to the quarter.
A three-storey overhang frames a generous public square along Schweigaards gate, creating a clear entrance to the area and activating the ground floor with cafés and public functions.
The volume responds carefully to surrounding streets and building heights, with upper levels set back to maintain a human-scaled streetscape.
Two office wings organised around a central core create flexible, light-filled workspaces with a rational layout that supports diverse ways of working. A central stair and atrium form the building’s social heart, encouraging movement, interaction, and visual connection.
The architecture combines a robust contemporary expression with natural warmth. Terracotta-toned ceramic façades with deep profiles reference the surrounding brick buildings, while extensive timber glulam columns, CLT cores, and exposed wood interiors reinforces the building’s sustainable ambitions.
Green roofs and planted terraces support biodiversity, stormwater management, and urban greenery, while timber construction enables a low-carbon, adaptable building designed for long-term resilience.
