Verksgata

The 45 new apartments of Verksgata are located in the waterfront of Stavanger. Historically this line of sea houses were placed right on the waters edge, allowing boats to load and unload goods directly into the building. This was done with the help of a crane from the characteristic crane house jutting out from the top of the gable.

Although there is a road in front of the building today due to the expansion of the town, the project still boasts sea views looking out onto the fjord.

The volumes build on and fill in a gap in the current row of seahouses. Two narrow facades face the water, organised on either side of a communal outdoor space. This opening allows the apartments towards to rear to also have a sea view.

The maritime atmosphere is furthered by a play element in the center. Built from a reconstructed sailboat, it is sculpture-like in appearance.

Towards the main road, a commercial space is designed in, inviting public access and interaction with the street.

The 46 apartments span from 50 m2 to 120 m2. The variety of sizing welcomes a mixed group of inhabitants. They share a rooftop terrace with views in every direction, both towards the city’s roofscape and towards the fjords. The apartment floors are raised from the ground to allow for privacy, with the first floor below becoming a parking garage and storage space for the inhabitants.
