B-camp

Re-using off-shore accommodation modules for affordable housing

A self-initiated low-budget living alternative of re-used modules from an offshore accommodation barge.

Flotel plan (apartments for industry employees working offshore). Highlighted modules make up B-camp.

The project repurposes discarded modules from an offshore accommodation barge to create affordable rental units. The aim is to provide housing for individuals who appreciate a short commute, a creative work environment, and access to recreational facilities, all adjacent to the former Helen & Hard studio.

The units are small but feature compensatory qualities, such as higher-than-average ceilings. Each unit has two levels, with the upper level connected to a private terrace. Residents also benefit from a spacious shared backyard and access to facilities in Helen & Hard’s workshop hall, including meeting rooms and a canteen.

Constructed from recycled modules, all additional interventions are also of recycled materials, such as the windows and doors and surfaces of scrap from the metal industry. Some facades are clad with transparent, corrugated recyclable plastic panels to take advantage of thermal heat. In addition to 5 cm of additional insulation it provides satisfactory thermal resistance.

In 2018, B-Camp was recycled again and transformed into a surf hotel at Borestrand, Bore Surf Hostel.
